We are launching our Festival with a free event! Featured will be the opening of an exhibit of Andy Nozaka's photographs of musicians, a short video starring Jon Jang and yours truly and a short program of performances by Jon Jang (solo piano) and a special ensemble of Francis Wong, Okinawan singer and sanshin performer Wesley Ueunten, bassist John Carlos Perea and Korean percussionist Dohee Lee.

Andy Nozaka

Description of the exhibit -

" I first met and began photographing AIR musicians in 1992 at a rehearsal of the J-Town Jazz Ensemble; Francis and Mark were mentoring the band. I had not known of the existence of a collective of such talented Asian American jazz musicians in the Bay Area - I knew then and there that I wanted to photograph these folks. Since that time I have befriended many musicians associated with AIR and continued to photograph the Asian American jazz movement - some 15 wonderful years.

My photographs by choice are in black and white - I take a lot of photos, but show only a few, selecting only those that best represent the spirit, soul, 'chi', whatever you want to call it, of the music. The exhibit does not claim to be comprehensive, but I hope that it gives an inkling of the spirit that infuses the movement. My congratulations to Asian Improv Arts on its 20th anniversary of advocating for social justice through music. Long may the movement continue to flourish!"
