Friday, September 28, 8 pm ODC Theater $15 adv $18 at the door

Come experience works by three prominent Asian American women artistic directors: Melody Takata of Gen Taiko, Dohee Lee of the Puri Project and Shuang "Sabrina Hou" of Peony Performing Arts.

Dancer/choregrapher/taiko performer Takata will perform a work in progress version of "Shimenawa" with collaborators Hideko Nakajima (voice, shamisen), Tatsu Aoki (shamisen), Lenora Lee (dancer/taiko performer). Shimenawa is the white rope placed atop a Torii Gate to protect from evil. In this work it represents the multiple intertwined strands of Japanese American culture that serves to protect the community's cultural integrity.

Dohee Lee (Korean percussion, voice, movement) will perform "Simchung" based on Korean pansori opera tradition. The work explores the value of filial piety in the relationship between father and daughter.

Kunqu opera artist Sabrina Hou will perform an excerpt of the famous Peonly Pavilion, one of the most famous works of Kunqu opera. Kunqu is the oldest and perhaps most poetic of the various Chinese opera forms
