Join us for a special afternoon of lecture & demonstration featuring the works of two innovative composers, improvisers, instrumentalists, and scholars: Erika Oba & Scott Oshiro. In this ongoing series "Living the Work", they will talk about their creative and cultural visions while providing examples of their work as community-based artists. Admission is free and open to all!

Francis Wong - AIR Co-Founder & saxophonist Francis Wong has been blessed to have an artistic career full of accomplishment and positive notice, including being considered one of "the great saxophonists of his generation" by the late jazz critic Phil Elwood. His work is well-documented on recordings, as he is featured on more than forty titles as a leader and sideman. For nearly four decades he has performed his own innovative brand of jazz and creative music for audiences in North America, Asia, and Europe with such musician luminaries as Jon Jang, Tatsu Aoki, Genny Lim, Miya Masaoka, Vijay Iyer, Jen Shyu, William Roper, Bobby Bradford, James Newton, Don Moye, Glenn Horiuchi, John Tchicai, Cecil Taylor, Max Roach, and Joseph Jarman. His career as a musician/composer is inextricable from his cultural and collaborative work and activism throughout the United States, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Lancaster, PA.
Erika Oba - Erika Oba is a composer, pianist/flutist, and educator based in the SF Bay Area. As a composer she has written works for big band, small jazz ensembles, chamber groups, dance and theater. She is active as a performer on both piano and flute, and performs with her own groups the Erika Oba Trio, Ends Meat’ Catastrophe Jazz Ensemble, Rice Kings, and The Sl(e)ight Ensemble.
Scott Oshiro - Scott is a Bay Area-based flutist and music technology researcher. As an African and Okinawan American, Scott’s creative and academic work incorporates influences from his heritage and combines them with Jazz, Hip Hop, and Electronic music. He recently received his Ph.D. at the Center for Computer Research in Music & Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, where he researched the intersection between quantum computing, music, and culture.
